Can I reverse or lift a self-exclusion if I change my mind later?

Self-exclusion in Ontario's regulated online market is deliberately designed to be hard to undo mid-term — and that's not an accident. Here's exactly how it works, and what your options look like once a term ends.

You cannot cancel a BetGuard exclusion while it's active

BetGuard, launched by iGaming Ontario, lets anyone 19 or older voluntarily opt out of all Ontario-regulated online gaming platforms through one portal — and while you're excluded, you're blocked from accessing existing accounts, creating new ones, or receiving marketing from any regulated site. The system is intentionally structured so that a change of heart mid-term doesn't simply undo it. When you enroll, you choose a term: 6 months, 1 year, 5 years, or a custom duration. That term is binding for its full length — there is no mid-period reversal mechanism under BetGuard's centralized program.

This mirrors the broader regulatory philosophy: operators are required to prevent centrally self-excluded persons from creating new player accounts or accessing existing accounts for as long as they continue to be on the registry. The exclusion runs its course; operators have no authority to lift it early on your behalf.

What happens when your chosen term expires

Expiry of the term doesn't mean automatic reinstatement. The BetGuard system was built to include reinstatement processes that are "intuitive, simple, and offer supporting resources" — meaning returning to play after a term ends requires a positive action on your part, not just the passage of time. You'd need to go back through BetGuard at betguard.ca to complete that process. This "active reinstatement" model is considered best practice in responsible gambling: the exclusion doesn't silently lapse and leave your accounts suddenly accessible again.

It's also worth knowing that operators are required to maintain their own site-level self-exclusion programs in addition to participating in BetGuard. If you self-excluded directly through an individual operator before BetGuard launched, the reinstatement process for that operator-specific exclusion would be governed by that operator's own terms — check their site or contact their support team directly.

Deposit and spending limits work differently

Don't confuse self-exclusion with the limit-setting tools (deposit limits, loss limits, session time limits). Those are a separate category, and the rules around changing them are distinct. Where a gaming limit has been previously set by a player, a request to relax or eliminate it can only be implemented after a cooling-off period of at least 24 hours — and the operator cannot make that change without a request from you, and only after the cooling-off period expires. So loosening a deposit limit takes a day; lifting a self-exclusion mid-term isn't possible at all.

If you're in Toronto and unsure whether a site you're considering is part of Ontario's regulated market, look for both the iGaming Ontario and BetGuard logos on the site — every fully registered and approved operator's site displays both logos, confirming the site is managed by iGaming Ontario and regulated by the AGCO. For the definitive list of registered operators, the iGaming Ontario registry is the live source of truth.

If you're reconsidering a self-exclusion because gambling has become a source of stress rather than entertainment, ConnexOntario (1-866-531-2600) offers free, confidential support around the clock — worth a call before making any decision about returning to play.
