Is it safe to play at an online casino in Ontario and how do I know the site can be trusted?
getting-started · Last reviewed October 14, 2026
Playing at a licensed Ontario online casino is genuinely safe — meaningfully safer than gambling offshore — but "safe" depends entirely on whether you're on a site that's actually registered in this province. That distinction is the whole ballgame.
How the regulated market actually works
The AGCO registers and regulates online gambling sites and sets standards to protect players while working to ensure game integrity for people across Ontario. iGaming Ontario (iGO) — working with the Government of Ontario and the AGCO — manages the online gaming market through private gaming companies called Operators. To get into that market, operators are only permitted to operate gaming sites that are online, provided they have entered into an operating agreement with iGaming Ontario and been registered by the AGCO. That's a meaningful bar. Operators who have successfully been registered by the AGCO and executed an Operating Agreement with iGO have met rigorous standards of game integrity, fairness, player protections, and social responsibility.
Once registered, operators face ongoing compliance obligations — not just a one-time application. The standards mandate that all registered operators proactively monitor player behaviour, intervene when risks of gambling-related harm are detected, and ensure employees are properly trained to support player protection. The AGCO enforces this with real consequences: it has issued monetary penalties against operators who fell short, which tells you the oversight isn't just theoretical.
How to spot a legitimate Ontario site
The quickest check is logos. Every internet gaming website offered by a fully registered and approved Operator in Ontario will display both the iGaming Ontario and BetGuard logos — if you see these logos, you know the website operations are managed by iGaming Ontario and regulated by the AGCO, giving you confidence that you're playing on a secure website that offers a safer and more socially responsible experience. BetGuard, launched in May 2026, is also Ontario's centralized self-exclusion service — one registration opts you out of all licensed operators in the province simultaneously, with term options ranging from six months to five years or a custom period.
Beyond the logos, cross-reference the operator against the official directory. A directory of all fully registered and authorized Operators and their igaming sites is available via the iGaming Ontario website. If a site doesn't appear there, it isn't regulated here — full stop. If a gaming site or Operator used to be included but is no longer listed, they have most likely ceased operations in Ontario.
What you actually get by staying in the regulated market
The practical protections are concrete. Your deposits are protected, your winnings are paid out, your personal information and data are secure, gameplay has fair competitive odds, and you have access to limit-setting features and other responsible gambling resources. Games themselves must be independently tested and certified before they go live — a critical feature of the regulatory framework requires operators to only offer games that are from registered gaming suppliers and have been certified by an AGCO-registered independent testing laboratory to meet the highest standards of game integrity.
If something does go wrong, you have recourse. The AGCO is only able to assist players with disputes related to regulated sites — if you are playing on an unregulated site, you are putting yourself at risk and should consider switching. Offshore or grey-market sites offer none of that backstop. If they withhold a withdrawal or close your account, there's no regulator to call.
On responsible gambling tools: every regulated gaming site in Ontario must meet the AGCO Registrar's Standards for Internet Gaming, and at a minimum operators must provide spend-limit and time-limit setting tools, and the ability to take a short-term break or to self-exclude for a longer term. If you ever set a deposit or loss limit and later want to raise or remove it, that change can't take effect immediately — the AGCO's standards require a cooling-off period of at least 24 hours, which is there specifically to prevent impulsive decisions from overriding your own safeguards. If gambling ever stops feeling like fun, ConnexOntario (1-866-531-2600) is the province's problem-gambling support line, and BetGuard at betguard.ca is how you self-exclude across all Ontario-licensed sites at once. All of this is for players 19 and older.
The short version: stick to sites showing both the iGaming Ontario and BetGuard logos, verify the operator in the official iGaming Ontario registry, and you're playing in a market with real rules and real enforcement behind it.
