What happens to my account if I move from Ontario to another province while I still have a balance?

Moving out of Ontario doesn't automatically erase your balance — but it does change what you can do with your account, and the right move before you leave is to withdraw your funds.

Residency vs. physical location: two different things

Ontario's regulated market draws a clear line between where you live and where you are when you play. A player's residency status is not a factor in whether they can play on websites offered by registered and authorized operators. The rule that actually matters is physical presence: players must be physically located in Ontario to play legally, but they can still register and manage their account — including depositing or withdrawing funds — while physically outside Ontario.

So the moment you cross into another province, your account stays open and your balance stays intact, but you lose the ability to place any wagers until you're back in Ontario. Operators are required to detect and dynamically monitor player location, and must block unverified attempts to play a game from outside the province. In practice, you'll be able to log in from BC or Quebec — you just won't be able to spin a slot or place a bet.

Your balance is protected — withdraw it when you're ready

The AGCO's Registrar's Standards for Internet Gaming are explicit that your money stays yours. Players are permitted to withdraw funds from their player account in an accurate and complete fashion and as soon as is practicable, subject to appropriate authorization and verification. iGaming Ontario takes steps to ensure that all player funds are subject to its oversight and remain available to players. Even if you formally close the account, where an account is deactivated by a player or another authorized individual, the player shall be able to recover the balance owing to them.

The practical advice: withdraw your balance before or shortly after you move. You can initiate that withdrawal from outside Ontario — the location restriction only applies to gameplay, not account management.

One exception worth knowing: OLG.ca has a stricter rule

OLG.ca operates under the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation rather than through iGaming Ontario's operator framework, and its terms go further. If a player will be relocating to a jurisdiction outside of Ontario, they are required to close their player account. That's a harder requirement than what private operators impose, so if you're an OLG.ca user, treat a permanent move as a trigger to close the account and pull out your funds.

If you're moving permanently and won't be back

For private iGaming Ontario operators, there's no blanket rule forcing account closure on a provincial move — the physical-location-to-play rule is what governs. That said, every operator's own terms and conditions may include their own language about residency or eligibility, and players must be provided with unambiguous information about all account fees prior to making a withdrawal, and informed clearly of all rules and restrictions regarding deposits and withdrawals.
