What happens to my account if I move to another province and am no longer an Ontario resident?

Here's the short version: moving to British Columbia, Alberta, or anywhere else in Canada does not automatically close your Ontario online casino account — but it does change what you can legally do with it.
Residency isn't the trigger — physical location is
A player's residency status is not a factor in whether they can play on websites offered by registered and authorized operators. The rule that matters is where your body is when you press "spin" or "deal." Players must physically be in Ontario to play legally, but regardless of that, they can register and manage their account — including depositing or withdrawing funds — while physically outside of Ontario.
So: account open, funds accessible, deposits and withdrawals still possible. What you cannot do legally is play games from a couch in Calgary or Halifax. Operators are required to put in place mechanisms to detect and dynamically monitor the location of a player attempting to play a game, and to block unverified attempts. Location checks occur at reasonable intervals to minimize the risk of play outside Ontario. In practice, the site's geolocation tech will block actual gameplay the moment it detects you're outside provincial borders.
What this means for you day-to-day
Your account stays active. You can log in, check your history, and withdraw any remaining balance — that's yours regardless of where you live. You just can't wager. Players located outside of Ontario but within Canada would not be permitted to participate in games or betting in the absence of an agreement between Ontario and the province or territory in which those players are located. No such cross-provincial agreements currently exist for private-market iGaming Ontario operators.
One practical note worth flagging: if an operator discovers that registration information on file is no longer accurate or complete — including because a player's circumstances have changed and the player did not update their information — the operator may take steps it determines appropriate in its sole discretion. In plain English: update your address when you move. Leaving stale information on your account is the kind of thing that can complicate a withdrawal down the road, even if it rarely causes immediate problems.
Before you go — a few things worth doing
- Withdraw your balance. There's no reason to leave funds sitting in an account you won't be actively using.
- Update your personal details. Check each operator's account settings and correct your address. Operators are required by the AGCO's Registrar's Standards to keep player records accurate.
- Check the new province's rules. BC has BCLC (PlayNow), Alberta has AGLC (PlayAlberta) — each province runs its own framework. Ontario-registered operators don't carry their licences across provincial lines.
- Consider closing accounts you won't use. An idle account is a minor security exposure. Most operators make closure straightforward through account settings or customer support.
If gambling has ever felt like something other than entertainment — whether you're in Toronto or anywhere else — ConnexOntario's helpline (1-866-531-2600) is available around the clock. And remember: you must be 19+ to hold an account in Ontario's regulated market.
One last check worth doing before you move: confirm your operator appears in the iGaming Ontario registry at igamingontario.ca — every internet gaming website offered by a fully registered and approved operator in Ontario displays both the iGaming Ontario and BetGuard logos, which tells you the site is managed by iGaming Ontario and regulated by the AGCO. That's the mark of the regulated market you've been playing in.
