To determine the winning number, a croupier (dealer) spins the wheel in one direction, then sends a ball rolling in the opposite direction around a tilted circular track on the outer edge. The ball eventually loses momentum, passes through deflectors, and drops into one of the numbered, coloured pockets. Anyone who bet on that outcome is paid.

Bets fall into two broad families. Inside bets cover specific numbers or small groups of them and pay more but win less often. Outside bets cover larger sections of the wheel — red/black, odd/even, high/low, dozens, columns — and pay less but land more frequently. A straight-up single-number bet pays 35 to 1; a split covering two numbers pays 17 to 1; a street covering three numbers pays 11 to 1; a corner covering four numbers pays 8 to 1; and a six-number line bet pays 5 to 1. The key thing to grasp is that payouts are fixed regardless of which wheel type you're sitting at — the wheel type is what changes your odds.

The Main Variants

European (Single-Zero) Roulette: The wheel has 37 pockets — numbers 1 through 36 alternating red and black, plus a single green zero pocket. This is the most common format online.
French Roulette: Uses the same single-zero wheel but adds two player-friendly rules. These are La Partage, which returns half your stake if the ball lands on zero on an even-money wager, and En Prison, which gives you a second chance to recover your bet under the same circumstances. These rules meaningfully reduce the effective house edge on even-money bets.
American (Double-Zero) Roulette: Features a wheel with 38 pockets — numbers 1 through 36, the single green zero, and an additional green pocket marked "00".
Live-Dealer Variants: Studios now offer speed roulette, lightning-style multiplier roulette, and immersive multi-camera tables. Multiplier variants keep the familiar inside and outside bets, then layer a separate mechanic onto straight-up numbers — selecting a handful of numbers each round and assigning published multiplier ranges, so a straight-up hit pays the multiplier payout instead of the standard amount.

Odds and House Edge: The Numbers That Matter

The house edge in roulette comes entirely from the zero pockets. This edge is built into the game through the green zero (or zeros) on the wheel, which ensures that even the fairest-seeming bets — such as red or black — do not have an exact 50/50 chance of winning. The green pockets skew the odds slightly in favour of the house.

A single-zero wheel carries a house edge of 2.70% across standard bets; a double-zero wheel roughly doubles that to 5.26%; and a triple-zero wheel pushes it to 7.69%. These figures are universal and do not vary by operator or title. Bet choice changes volatility, not the house edge, on standard roulette — so switching from red/black to a straight-up number makes your session more volatile, but the casino's mathematical advantage stays the same. French roulette with La Partage effectively halves the edge on even-money bets, making it the most player-friendly standard format available. No betting system — Martingale, Fibonacci, or otherwise — can statistically overcome the casino's advantage, since the expected value of each allowed bet is negative.

A Brief History

Roulette was derived in France in the early 18th century from the older games hoca and portique, and is first mentioned under its current name in 1716 in Bordeaux. The general consensus traces the wheel itself back to French mathematician Blaise Pascal, who inadvertently created it in 1655 as part of his quest to produce a perpetual motion machine. In 1843, in the German spa casino town of Bad Homburg, François and Louis Blanc introduced the single-zero roulette wheel to compete against casinos offering the traditional wheel with both a single and double zero. When the German government abolished gambling in the 1860s, the Blanc family moved to Monte Carlo, where the single-zero wheel became the premier game and was eventually exported around the world — except in the United States, where the double-zero format took hold and remains standard. In 1996, the first online casino made it possible to play roulette online, and the game has been a cornerstone of internet casinos ever since.
